Cat 2 - Overlooking the Harbour, St Ives

Jeremy Gardiner

Gardiner trained at Newcastle University and The Royal College of Art. His paintings have now been shown in Europe, The USA, South America, Japan, Australia and China. Despite living in the U.S.A for fourteen years and painting in both Brazil and Greece, Gardiner admits, "it is still England that stirs my imagination the most". His work can be characterized by conveying a multi-dimensional response to landscape, with a particular focus on the Cornish coast, The Lake district and Dorset. A depth of geological knowledge and concern for the environment lays a foundation within his practice, whilst a spatial complexity reveals his unique perspective on the notion of 'place'.

Gardiner fuses his technical capability with a deep awareness of the atmosphere and history of a particular location. He employs a layering process in which he builds up coats of paint and collage only to sand them down and re-apply, in an attempt to emulate the effects of time on physical terrain. There is also a diverse use of materials through the incorporation of studies of industrial forms, Landsat imagery (photographs taken from satellites in space) and Nazca Indian line drawings. He creates an interplay between proximity and distance in terms of space within the pieces. This is visually reflected in his work by the contrast between the crisp, clean lines that overlay the worn, weathered and richly tactile surfaces. Reminiscent of the works of John Tunnard and Ben Nicholson, there is a focus on constructing semi-abstract compositions that carry a note of geometric stylization.
